Shakes give a textured, shingled face. Board and batten gives tall vertical lines. Together they set parts of one facade apart.

Seamless eavestroughs
Seamless eavestroughs run in one continuous length along a roof edge, with no joints along the run, and carry the water to the downspouts.

Soffit and fascia
Soffit closes in the underside of the eaves. Fascia is the trim board along the roof edge, where the eavestrough hangs.
